A new marriage initiative in California which would change the law that allows married couples to get divorced has entered into the petition phase. The initiative would preserve the right for married couples to get an annulment, but it is expected to save the state hundreds millions of dollars by eliminating the costs to support the divorce process. The petition must gain 694,354 or 8% of the votes cast in the 2006 gubernatorial election within 150 days in order to be put on the ballot.
Although there is some speculation that this move is in retaliation against the majority voters that passed proposition 8 (defining marriage as between one man and one woman), I think there’s an additional benefit that no one has thought of. The divorce lawyers will have to pack up and go to another state! Good on ya, California!
